This new biopic chronicles an important period in the life of French painter Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). In 1891, disillusioned with the Parisian art world, Gauguin left his friends and family and traveled alone to Tahiti, where he found inspiration and developed the style of his best-known paintings. Vincent Cassel portrays the artist with intensity and charisma. The story explores the artist’s challenges living in an unfamiliar country, and his involvement with the young woman who became his muse, Tehura (Tuheï Adams).
“Cassel, one of France’s singular talents, delivers an absorbing performance, committing to his role on both mental and physical levels. His Gauguin is a man on the move, impatient, headstrong, defiant in the face of disease and defeat.” —Film Journal International
