Children of the Mist

In the misty mountains of northern Vietnam, Di, a spirited Hmong teenager, faces the challenges of a culture where girls marry as early as 14. In this insular community, girls must also endure the controversial but accepted tradition of “bride kidnapping.” But at school Di learns there are alternatives. One night, her parents are shocked to find that Di has disappeared. Winner of multiple international awards, Hà Lệ Diễm’s documentary is a tender portrait of a community on the cusp between tradition and modernity, and one girl tragically stuck in the middle.
