Calligraphy Workshop | A Brush with Zen

This workshop complements the exhibition None Whatsoever: Zen Paintings from the Gitter-Yelen Collection.

Join artist and calligrapher Aiko Hayashi for an introduction to shodo, “the way of the brush.” The workshop addresses the chance, gestural—and ephemeral—qualities of Zen painting, which distinguish it from other schools of Japanese art.

Materials are provided. Ink may stain clothing, so please dress accordingly. Space is limited to 20 participants, ages 10 and up, on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the Artist
Aiko Hayashi, a native of Japan, began practicing calligraphy at the age of 5. She teaches the art form at Houston Zen Center.
