Anna Magnani stars as a stage mother in a film that romanticizes the power of celluloid dreams and delivers a cuttingly cynical takedown of the industry. A casting call for child actors floods the studio with starry-eyed participants, including Magnani’s working-class Roman nurse and her daughter. Visconti explains, “I wanted to draw a portrait of a modern woman . . . It has been said that I put irony and sarcasm into the portrayal of a woman’s environment, but it wasn’t so: this was only a consequence.”
