A Couple (Un couple)

A Couple (Un couple)

Directed by Frederick Wiseman
(France/USA, 2022, digital, in French with English subtitles)

Surprisingly, the latest film by Frederick Wiseman is not an observational documentary, the style for which he is known. Instead, A Couple is a portrait of love and marriage inspired by the letters of writer and artist Countess Sophia Behrs (1844–1919). She was married to author Leo Tolstoy and had 13 children with him while enduring his infidelities. Reciting from her letters in a one-woman performance, Nathalie Boutefeu is mesmerizing. With this feature, the MFAH continues its commitment to presenting each new film by Wiseman, whose 93rd birthday is coming up on January 1, 2023.
