On Sunday, May 20, the MFAH invites you to enjoy an afternoon of activities for all ages! “Celebrating Community: Opening Day” inaugurates the first completed phase of the Museum’s campus project as the new Glassell School of Art; The Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza; and the BBVA Roof Garden open to the public.
This free event gives Houstonians a chance to check out the new greenspace, make art, enjoy music, and much more. Elizabeth Roath Garcia, our studio and gallery programs manager, shares a preview for the opening-day festivities.
What can visitors expect during the event on May 20?
We’re bringing in many of our community partners, so with music, dance, art, and more, visitors will be sure to find something that speaks to them! The afternoon is structured to let you find little surprises around every corner.
How do you think the new public area is a benefit to the MFAH campus?
The entire space is activated and full of energy! Not only are there two monumental sculptures on The Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza—including the amazing Cloud Column by Anish Kapoor—but when you head up to the BBVA Roof Garden, you get the best view of the whole city. I think these additions showcase to everyone what a true masterpiece the MFAH is and how the Museum feeds off our city’s dynamic energy.
I’m sure it’s hard to choose, but what part of “Celebrating Community” are you most looking forward to?
Everything is going to be fantastic. The music is going to be awesome, the dancers from METdance and MECA are all going to be remarkable—and, of course, we have art activities for everyone, from babies to adults. But I am most excited about the art-making game “Outside the Box: Creativity Challenge,” a competition where groups create works of art using boxes of mystery materials (like an artsy version of Chopped on the Food Network). I can’t wait to see what everyone makes!
