Chalereux Abbot with Friends
Daniele Tamagni’s 2010 photo-essay introduced the world to a group of men in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. These “sapeurs” visibly declare their membership in the Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (SAPE) with boldly colored and carefully curated fashions. The sapeurs follow to a strict honor code regarding public and private, appearance and conduct, the individual and the community. Tamagni masterfully depicted them in their bold fashions, with the men patiently and proudly staring back at the camera, their character as orderly and unblemished as their attire.
