Anderson & Low, a pair of artists who have collaborated for more than 20 years, sought young models in Asia whose personal styles—makeup, costume, and hairstyle—imitate the animated characters of manga and anime (Japanese comics and animation). For this photograph, they digitally imposed images of two men dressed as anime samurai onto a flat, illustrated color field background. Notice how they subtly enhanced the eyes and glossed the image, blurring the line between living subject and animated character. The resulting photograph evokes a tradition of Japanese samurai films while providing space for the subjects to further explore their self-defined manga identities.
