“Line: Making the Mark”

Title
Line: Making the Mark

Dates
December 12, 2014–March 22, 2015

Overview
With the advent of Modernism in the 20th century, line became its own definitive subject for artists, who no longer used it merely for representational purposes. Line: Making the Mark explores the sundry ways that artists, since that historic shift, make marks—either directly, by pressing pencil to paper or brushing ink onto a surface; or indirectly, such as drawing on stone, carving into wood, or etching into metal, and then transferring the marks to another surface through the printmaking process. Selected from the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this exhibition presents some 50 drawings and prints by artists including Josef Albers, Louise Bourgeois, Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, Sam Messenger, Joan Mitchell, and Barnett Newman.
