Mission: Apollo-Saturn 11: Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., on the moon

NASA did not want the precious time of the first men sent to the moon wasted on taking "tourist snapshots," but this photograph became the iconic image of space exploration: a man standing on the moon -- unbelievable yet undeniable. It awed the world then, and continues to inspire new generations to reach even higher and go even farther.
Alan Bean, astronaut (the fourth man to walk on the moon, on Apollo 12) and artist (trained at the MFAH's Glassell School of Art) is uniquely able to interpret his experiences on the moon in paint. He textures his canvases with tools he used on the moon, and embeds into the layers of paint slivers of his moon suit's patches and a sprinkling of moon dust.

With its medieval castles, picturesque towns and vineyards sloping down the steep hillsides, the valley of the Rhine is an especially romantic setting both for boisterous celebrations or quiet contemplation of a moonlit night such as this. Laughter and music seem to permeate this charming, nostalgic scene.

A Puzzling Picture: Rubens (second from right) was invited to the court of Mantua by Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga in 1600, but did he really meet Galileo (third from left) there? Who are the others? Is Rubens depicting the Aurora borealis in the night sky or is he making a reference to his name? Is it really Mantua in the background?
