Overview of the Hirsch Library
The Hirsch Library is the art research center of the MFAH, containing an extensive collection of
books, exhibition catalogs, artists files, and auction catalogs.

Since 1927, the Hirsch Library has collected widely on subjects ranging from
ancient art to contemporary art, including drawing,
painting, sculpture, photography, and the decorative arts.
The library was renovated in 2000. Large tables by the window
overlooking the Alice Pratt Brown Garden provide a pleasant reading area.
Current periodicals, auction catalogs, and the reference book collection are
adjacent to the reading area, as is an electronic
resources room equipped with computer terminals to provide researchers with
access to the library's on-line catalog, art-related
subscription databases, and the Internet.
Book stacks are on the lower level, and are not open to the public.
Books can be retrieved by the staff at the reference desk. The library staff is
available to help, in person, by phone or by email request. For in-depth
research, you are encouraged to visit the library where the experienced staff
can advise and assist you in person.
In addition to the main collection, the library maintains the book
collections for Bayou Bend and the Prints, Drawings and Photographs study
room. Currently the library contains over 60,000 books and over 80,000 other records.
