Machi is an indigenous Kuna raised in the ways and traditions of Panama´s San Blas islands, but when he turns fifteen, he must move to the slums of Panama City, where he will stay with his uncle, working and attending school. Rosy, also Kuna, was born and raised in the city and has never been to the islands. She dreams of being a model and dating a non-indigenous boy. The lives of Machi and Rosy come together when her grandfather dies and she must go to the islands for the first time. Written and directed by Vero Bollow and the Igar Yala Collective, a cooperative of indigenous Kuna youth, the story is based on the real-life experiences of the cooperative´s members, and reveals the beauty of their traditional island culture which is at risk of disappearing. A moving and original experience, The Wind and the Water is the first feature-length narrative film from Panama.

Machi es un indígena Kuna criado en las tradiciones y forma de vida de las islas de San Blás en Panamá. Al cumplir sus quince años, Machi debe mudarse a una barriada de la Ciudad de Panamá donde se hospeda con su tío, trabaja y asiste a la escuela. Por otro lado, Rosy es también de la etnia Kuna aunque nacida y criada en la ciudad y a pesar de nunca haber ido a las islas. Ella sueña con ser modelo y en salir con un muchacho que no sea indígena. Las vidas de Machi y de Rosy se cruzan cuando muere el abuelo de ésta y debe ir a las islas por primera vez. Escrita y dirigida por Vero Bellow y el Colectivo Igar Yala — una cooperativa de jóvenes indígenas Kuna Yala — Burwa dii eboes una historia basada en las experiencias de la vida real de los integrantes de la cooperativa y reveladora de la belleza de las tradiciones de su cultura isleña, la cual está en riesgo de desaparecer. Además de ser una experiencia fílmica conmovedora y original, éste es el primer largometraje narrativo hecho en Panamá.

La directora Vero Bollow fundó el Colectivo Igar Yala en el 2004. Este grupo que opera desde la cinematografía y las bellas artes dedica su esfuerzo a tales temas como la memoria cultural, la autoría colectiva y el fortalecimiento comunitario. El colectivo está compuesto mayormente por jóvenes Kuna urbanos y rurales quienes trabajan con los ancianos más respetados de su comunidad además de con artistas internacionales.

In 2004, director Vero Bollow founded the Igar Yala Collective, a filmmaking and arts group dedicated to themes of cultural memory, collective authorship, and community empowerment. The collective consists mainly of rural and urban Kuna youth working in collaboration with elders and international artists.
