On a day like any other, driving through the countryside, Vero looks away from the road for just a moment to attend to her cell phone. But as she does, she loses control of the car, which lurches and bounces to a stop, leaving her shaken. She drives a bit further before stopping to look back. Was it just a dog or maybe a child? Director Lucrecia Martel burst on the world cinema scene in 2001, when she won the coveted Alfred Bauer Award at Berlin with her debut film The Swamp (La cienaga). With this, her third film, Martel disturbed and divided audiences in the official competition of Cannes in 2008 with a tale of quotidian horror, and confirmed her title as the most fascinating director of the New Argentine Cinema.

Mientras maneja por el campo en un día como cualquier otro, Vero aleja su vista de la carretera por un momento para contestar su teléfono móvil. Al hacerlo pierde el control de su auto, deteniéndose luego de un violento bandazo que la deja sacudida. Ella conduce un poco más hasta que para a mirar hacia atrás sin saber si fue un perro o quizás un niño. La directora Lucrecia Martel irrumpió en el panorama del cine mundial en el 2001, cuando ganó el prestigioso premio Alfredo Bauer del Festival de Cine de Berlín por La ciénaga, su primera película. Con ésta su tercera producción, Martel dejó al público de la competición oficial del Festival de Cannes de 2008 tanto perturbado como dividido, confirmándose con esta historia de horror cotidiano como la más fascinante directora del nuevo cine argentino.

Martel nació en el 1966. Estudió animación en Avellaneda Experimental (AVEX) en Buenos Aires, en la Escuela Nacional de Experimentación y Realización Cinematográfica (ENERC) por varios años y cursó estudios en la ciencia de la comunicación. Entre 1988 y 1994, Martel dirigió un sinfín de cortometrajes y en el 2001 dirigió La ciénaga, un largometraje premiado en los festivales de Berlín, La Habana, Tolosa y Sundance. En el 2004, Martel escribió y dirigió La niña santa, película que fue nominada para el palmarés de oro en la edición de ese año del Festival de Cine de Cannes.
