A group of civic leaders organizes the Houston Public School Art League for the "encouragement of art and culture in the public school system."
 


1924


The original MFAH building, designed by William Ward Watkin, opens its doors to the public, becoming the first art museum building in Texas and the third in the South.

1926
The museum completes the Watkin design with the addition of two wings.
 


1930
The Garden Club of Houston begins maintaining the museum grounds.
 


1939


MFAH Trustee Miss Ima Hogg begins to donate her extensive collections of Native American art, Frederic Remington paintings, and avant-garde European prints and drawings.

Edith and Percy Straus bequeath 87 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, including Italian Renaissance masterpieces.

Sarah Campbell Blaffer begins donating major gifts of art, including paintings by Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas.

The Robert Lee Blaffer Memorial Wing, designed by Kenneth Franzheim, opens.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designs a 25-year master plan for the museum.
 


1957
Miss Ima Hogg donates her 28-room home, Bayou Bend; her esteemed collection of American decorative arts and paintings; and the 14 acres of gardens surrounding Bayou Bend.
 


1958


Funded by Nina Cullinan and designed by Mies van der Rohe, Cullinan Hall opens.
