In person: Filmmaker Peter Lucas
This program of experimental film/video work by Houston-based artist Peter Lucas features the world premiere of his new short film, Unearthling (2014), as well as his recent Voyager Found (2013). With gritty black-and-white photography and a layered soundtrack of electronic music and sound, Unearthling centers on the arrival of a mysterious figure from another world. Voyager Found is a collaged reworking of the image, music, and sound elements included in the “golden record” launched into space in 1977 as a communication of humanity to possible alien life. To open the show, Lucas and artist/film collector Bill Daniel will create a live audiovisual collage with multiple projections of various 16mm films accompanied by music and sound.
Peter Lucas’s work includes and often combines practices in motion and still photography, collage, sound, and music. His work has been shown at Lawndale Art Center; DiverseWorks; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Directors Guild of America; and various festivals, galleries, and alternative spaces. Lucas is also an independent curator who has organized exhibitions, film series, and events in association with the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Menil Collection; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Aurora Picture Show; Northwest Film Forum; and Seattle International Film Festival.
