DRAMA IN THE HOUSE

The Go-Between

An elderly man recalls his young life as a messenger in pre-World War I England between aristocratic Lady Trimingham (Julie Christie) and groundskeeper Ted Burgess (Alan Bates). The forbidden love story builds to a climax as tragedy befalls everyone when the couple’s relationship is discovered.

“The key theme of Losey's film—how the past shapes the present and yet constantly eludes us—is reflected in the oft-quoted line which opens both novel and film, ‘the past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.’” —British Film Institute

About the house: Though inspired by the very-real Bradenham Hall (Norfolk), the movie’s Brandham Hall utilized Melton Constable Hall (Northfolk) as its primary location, incorporating other areas around Northfolk for the exteriors in the town and country.
