3rd Annual Italian Retrospective: Pupi Avati
return

Meet filmmaker Pupi Avati and his producer brother Antonio Avati on September 19-20.

One of the most evocative filmmakers of contemporary Italian cinema, director Pupi Avati was born in Bologna in 1938, studied at the University of Florence, and joined a jazz band as clarinetist. Avati shot his first film in 1968 and also engaged in scriptwriting and production. During his prolific career (33 films), this eclectic and independent director has embraced several genres: thriller, comedy, epic, and psychological drama. He collaborated as scriptwriter with Pier Paolo Pasolini on Sįlo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. Many of Avati´s films blend humor and melancholy, and he mainly draws inspiration from personal experience and a keen interest in ordinary people. Avati is a master of creating uncanny atmospheres in his suspense thrillers, often marketed as horror films, although he avoids special effects and graphic violence. Often compared to the French director Franēois Truffaut, Avati has steadily refused the intrusion of politics and ideologies in his cinema. Their films neither develop a thesis nor encode a message, an attitude that could be defined as heretical in times of highly politicized cinema and literature. They also share an empathetic, non-judgmental attitude toward their characters and frequent incursions into thriller territory. —Luisetta Chomel, Professor Emerita of Italian at the University of Houston
