Electric Purgatory: The Fate of the Black Rocker
return

Electric Purgatory: The Fate of the Black Rocker Directed by Raymond Gayle

USA, 2005

Color
83 Minutes

Show Times:

Fri., Feb. 1 7:00 PM

Houston filmmaker Raymond Gayle in attendance.

This documentary is a lively contribution to the history of rock music, examining reasons behind the lack of commercial success experienced by many contemporary black rock musicians. Blending classic performance footage from Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince with music and opinions from the current generation of artists — among them Fishbone, Living Colour, and the Roots — the film tackles such difficult questions as the ambivalence of the music industry towards black rockers and their complicated relationships with African-American audiences. Electric Purgatory has been featured at numerous prestigious festivals including the U.S. and abroad, including the Festival du Film Panafricain in Cannes, New Zealand´s International Documentary Film Festival, the San Francisco Black Film Festival, and the Singapore International Film Festival.

A panel discussion on "Blacks in Rock-n-Roll," moderated by Egie Ighile, managing editor of Objectif Magazine, follows the screening. Panelists include: Raymond Gayle (filmmaker), Zin (KPFT´s SOS Radio), Jeff Balke (Houston Chronicle), and Doug Pinnick (King´s X).

Cosponsored by Satori Phoenix Arts and Mass Media Organization (SPAMMO).

Raymond Gayle has worked in the film industry as a producer, writer, director, cinematographer, sound recordist and mixer, and editor. Electric Purgatory is his first feature length documentary.
