Widely considered one of the greatest films in the history of cinema, 8 1⁄2 stars Marcello Mastroianni as a film director whose latest project has stalled. Tormented by "creative block," the director works through his past, revisiting places and people, re-creating memories and fantasies, until he is able to banish the guilt and fear that have paralyzed him. The cast includes Anouk Aimée and Claudia Cardinale.

"Here is a piece of entertainment that will really make you sit up straight and think, a movie endowed with the challenge of a fascinating intellectual game. It sets up a labyrinthine ego for the daring and thoughtful to explore, and it harbors some elegant treasures of wit and satire along the way." —New York Times

Alessandro Carrera is an associate professor and director of Italian Studies at the University of Houston. He has contributed scholarship on Italian literature, music, and cultural theory and has won awards for his creative writing.
