Dutch Light (Hollands licht)
Directed by Pieter-Rim de Kroon
(The Netherlands, 2003, 60 min., subtitled)
The remarkable quality of light in Holland is memorably captured in the paintings of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and many other Dutch Masters. But has pollution caused its special radiance to disappear? This striking and original documentary attempts to separate fact from fiction by presenting divergent ideas and theories (including those of 20th-century German conceptual artist Joseph Beuys) about colors, images, landscapes—and of course, light.
Ode to Avalanche
Directed by Ken Bailey
(USA, 1998, 6 min.)
Few forces in nature are as frightening or dazzling as an avalanche. This exhilarating film, shot in Telluride, Colorado, captures one in full fury.
Crown of the Continent
Directed by John Grabowska
(USA, 2003, 28 min.)
As big as six Yellowstones and larger than Switzerland with higher mountain peaks, Alaska´s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is a wild, remote landscape of incomprehensible grandeur. This inspirational tour is accompanied by spare poetic narration and an original orchestral score.
Parking
Directed by Bill Plympton
(USA, 2003, 5 min.)
Renowned animator Bill Plympton employs his trademark wit to depict a battle between a blade of grass and a parking-lot attendant.
