For more than twenty-five years, The Art Guys—Houston-based Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing—have intrigued, entertained, puzzled, and moved audiences with their art. Theirs is a world where the everyday becomes monumental, humor is serious, and the ridiculous meets the sublime. Best known for their numerous staged performances and public spectacles, The Art Guys have presented their work in grocery stores, movie theaters, airports, restaurants, sports arenas, and other non-traditional venues for experiencing art while also exploiting mass media and entertainment to explore contemporary society and issues.
The Art Guys talk about and show selections from Home on the Range, the new two-DVD box set anthology of their work from 1983 through 2008 produced by Microcinema International. The set includes live stage performances, conceptual events in public, video works, and the ZenFilm documentary, Nothing To It: The Art Guys in Concert.
Clint Willour, curator of the Galveston Art Center, moderates the event. A DVD signing follows the program. Only DVD sets purchased at the MFAH will be signed.
