The French academy emphasized the importance of figure studies from life as part of a student´s artistic training. Ingres executed this award-winning oil sketch while still working in the studio of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Though it remains unfinished, the composition also reveals the refined contours and emphasis on line that characterize the artist´s later work.
