Someone´s Laundry Dryer

Kandace Simmons, Someone´s Laundry Dryer, 2005
Eye on Third Ward is a twelve-year collaboration between the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Magnet School of Communication at Jack Yates High School. Each year, select photographs taken by students present a new look at one of Houston´s oldest communities. Third Ward is a historically black neighborhood located between the Museum District and the University of Houston. Dating to 1840, Third Ward is one of the four original "wards" of the city of Houston, precursors of today´s city council districts. Only Third Ward continues to maintain a strong sense of community and political strength.

The photographs in this exhibition, created under the guidance of Yates photography teacher Ray C. Carrington, III, are distinctive for the number of personal connections students made with the subjects they photographed. These are referenced in the student texts that accompany each photograph.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is also pleased to present select photographs from the exhibition Eye on Krakow. Using the MFAH Eye on Third Ward program as a model, the Eye on Krakow program was produced through a partnership between the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow and the U Siemachy Association, an organization that works with public institutions and commercial entities to provide positive learning environments for underserved and at-risk youth in Krakow.

The 12 photographs exhibited here represent a small portion of the work done by 20 students from the U Siemachy Youth Center who participated in classes conducted by photographer Chris Schwarz during the fall of 2005. The Eye on Krakow project culminated in an exhibition at the Krakow Museum of the History of Photograph and included photographs from the MFAH Eye on Third Ward project. The catalogue for the Krakow exhibition is also on view in the gallery.
