Courbet and the Modern Landscape

On view Sunday, June 18 - Sunday, September 10, 2006 at the Audrey Jones Beck Building

Sunset on Lake Léman (Coucher de soleil sur le lac Léman)

Gustave Courbet , Sunset on Lake Léman (Coucher de soleil sur le lac Léman), 1874
Musée Jenisch, Vevey, Switzerland, P 66
Photograph by Claude Cornand, Lausanne
While the large-scale figurative works of Gustave Courbet´s early to mid-career—textbook pictures such as The Burial at Ornans, The Stonebreakers, and Studio of the Artist—are of signal significance to the history of western art, it is in the genre of landscape that the artist laid the groundwork for a vital strain of modernist painting.

The exhibition brings together approximately 50 landscape paintings by Courbet. He is shown to be a radical innovator in both the motifs he chose to paint and, more significantly, in his performative style of painting. Courbet created within the genre of landscape painting a site for improvisation and the display of technical virtuosity, making the act of painting a highly individualistic form of self-expression.

The exhibition is presented in six themed categories, according to subjects in Courbet´s landscape oeuvre: Cliffs and Valleys; Forests and Streams; Rocks and Grottoes; Snowscapes; Seascapes; and scenes in Switzerland.
