Domenico Cresti, called Il Passignano, The Head of a Youth, c. 1600—1625, 2009.516 MFAH purchase with funds provided by the Museum Collectors
Drawing has long been considered the foundation of the visual arts. A drawing, whether a single mark or a complex circuitry of lines, is often the first expression of a creative response to an idea, its immediacy a direct representation of the artist´s imagination. On view are five chalk drawings from the MFAH permanent collection by Italian and French master draftsmen of the 16th through 18th centuries.
This small but exceptional selection of figural drawings ranges from studies of the head and torso to full figures. It also highlights two of the museum´s most recent acquisitions: Domenico Passignano´s The Head of a Youth and Jean-Baptiste Greuze´s Reclining Female Nude: Study for Aegina Visited by Jupiter.
Because of their light-sensitive materials, drawings often reside in museum storage facilities, segregated from the paintings and sculptures for which they were prepared. Do not miss the unique opportunity to view these precious works, which can be out on display for only a limited time.
