Text by Rod Slemons, Cover from Like a One-Eyed Cat: Photographs by Lee Friedlander, 1956-1987
Lee Friedlander has been one of the most prolific and active photographers of the 20th century. His energy and commitment to the medium carries over into his passion for the photographic book. One would be hard-pressed to think of another photographer who has more actively promoted the photobook or produced more photographs during the latter half of the 20th century. In his 40 years as a photographer, he has designed and overseen the production of more than 45 publications, including limited editions.
This exhibition features a sampling of Friedlander´s publications from the beginning of his career to his latest books, emphasizing the continuity as well as the breadth of his oeuvre. Additionally, it will feature Atget: Photographe de Paris (1930), which was influential to his work and future publications, as well as the publication Storyville Portraits: Photographs from the New Orleans Red-light District, Circa 1912 (1970), which highlights the neglected work of New Orleans photographer, E.J. Bellocq. Friedlander was the impetus for the production of this book, as well as the printer for Bellocq´s work.
