The exhibition focuses on the sublime objects created in gold by the Pre-Columbian cultures of Colombia over a period of 2,000 years, from around 500 B.C. to 1600 A.D. Among the works are intricately fashioned figures of shamans in transformation into powerful animals, pendants, staff finials, and nose and ear ornaments in the form of birds, felines, caimans, crocodiles, and serpents. These objects — in cast, hammered, and repoussé gold — explore the meaning given to gold by the indigenous cultures of Colombia, their view of the cosmos, and the powers exercised by shamans and chiefs through gold implements.
The exhibition is organized by the Museo del Oro, Banco de la República, Bogotá, Colombia.
