The acquisition of the world-renowned Manfred Heiting Collection brings the MFAH photography holdings to an impressive total of nearly 20,000 prints.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, acquired The Manfred Heiting Collection, one of the finest photography collections in the world, in 2002. This encyclopedic collection provides an unparalleled visual record of the people, places, and events that defined the Western world, beginning with the invention of photography in 1839.

Manfred Heiting assembled approximately 4,000 photographs of exceptional quality over the past 30 years. The Amsterdam-based collector, named one of America´s top 100 art collectors by Art & Antiques magazine last year, set out to obtain the finest examples available of every major photographer´s work. Because he often had direct contact with many of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, the Heiting Collection would be impossible to replicate today.
