Homeschool Workshops
Homeschool families can enrich their school curriculum with a world of art at workshops and family days.

New in Fall 2010: Homeschool Family Day
Art Passport: Travel the World at the MFAH will be the theme for a Fall 2010 Homeschool Family Day. From 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, homeschool families can participate in art-making and gallery experiences that will give everyone the opportunity to explore works of art from different cultures and time periods throughout the museum. No pre-registration is required. The program activities are free and admission to the museum is free on Thursdays, courtesy of Shell. For more information, call 713-639-7586 or e-mail families@mfah.org

Homeschool Workshops

There are six specially designed workshops offered during the 2010-2011 schoolyear for the entire homeschool family. Each workshop includes an interactive gallery tour with hands-on activities and group discussions, followed by an opportunity to create a related art project. This is a family program in which adults and children participate together in the gallery and art-making experiences. All participants receive materials that can be used to extend the lesson at home.

Pre-registration is required. This program is available only to homeschool families with children ages 4 to 12. We ask that there be one adult per three children.

Workshop times: Families can choose to enroll in the morning or afternoon sessions.
Please note the time changes. The morning session is 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and the afternoon session is 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. All families will be asked to check in at the registration table in the Audrey Jones Beck Building lobby; please enter at the Porte-Cochere Door.

Workshop dates: The second Tuesday of the month; October 12, November 9, January 11, February 8, April 12, and May 10.

Cost
This is a family program in which adults and children participate together in the gallery and art-making experiences. The cost is $5.00 per person (adults and children) for non-members and $4.00 per person (adults and children) for MFAH members. There is no fee for children ages 3 and younger accompanying older siblings. There will not be an additional admission cost.

Faces of the World

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Looking at art from ancient cultures can be one of the best ways to learn about life long ago. At this workshop, participants will explore ancient art from many cultures, including fascinating sculptures from Ife, the ancient city-state of the Yoruba people in present-day Nigeria. Many of the objects in this traveling exhibition have never been on display outside of Nigeria. In the studio, participants will create artwork that also focuses on the face.

Discovering Contemporary Latin American Art

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

During this visit, participants will explore how Latin American artists are expressing ideas and stories using a variety of materials in the exhibition Cosmopolitan Routes: Houston Collects Latin American Art. In the studio, participants will create their own works of art inspired by what is on view.

Baskets, Pots, and Paintings: Native American Art

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

This visit offers a chance to see works of art made by artists from many different Native American communities. Participants will learn about the types of materials used, how symbols of the natural world are used to decorate and tell stories, and the cultural traditions connected to the works of art. In the studio, participants will create their own container, using weaving techniques.

Flickers of Light, Dabs of Color

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Participants will learn about how Impressionist painters created a distinctive look with a variety of techniques and new ways of working as an artist. In the studio, participants will use the pointillism technique to create their own works of art.

Color in Art

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Participants will explore the power of color and how it can be used in many different ways to create works of art. In the gallery, we will focus on how the artist Carlos Cruz-Diez used a variety of materials and his knowledge of color theory to create eye-boggling works of art. In the studio, participants will use color theory principles and their imagination to create their own work of art.

Ancient Heroes, Myths, and Tragedies

Tuesday, May 10, 2010

Discover more about the ancient stories in art that have endured for centuries. Participants will have the chance to look at and learn about how these stories influenced the look of objects that were used for everyday use as well as ceremonial occasions. In the studio, participants will use stories from their own life as inspiration for the art project.
