This season, the MFAH Online Book Club features The Awakening by Kate Chopin and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton in conjunction with the exhibitions Sargent and the Sea, Houston´s Sargents, and Prendergast in Italy. These exhibitions showcase the work of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), two American painters who had a major impact on 20th century American art. The novels of American writers Kate Chopin (1851-1904) and Edith Wharton (1862-1937)—contemporaries of Sargent and Prendergast—invite a fascinating conversation with and about the artists´ works on view. Book Club Visits for these books begin in February and will be offered through May 2010.

Please note: there are many editions of these two books available. The MFAH is using (and selling) the Norton Critical Editions of each — they are full of a wealth of additional materials: reading notes, historical information, illustrations, and essays.

Support the museum by purchasing your books through MFAH Shop.
