Water Lilies (Nymphéas)

1907

Oli on canvas

68.31

For his series of water-lily paintings, Claude Monet started the paintings outside in his garden in Giverny, and then returned to his studio to rework them. The studio work served not only to enhance the original effect, making the impression more sophisticated and durable, but also to integrate each individual painting into the series as a whole. In May 1909, Monet presented this work, along with 47 other water-lily paintings, at a highly successful exhibition in the gallery of his art dealer, Durand-Ruel.

Gift of Mrs. Harry C. Hanszen
