On View in the Beck Building

Recommended by: Helga K. Aurisch, Associate Curator, European Art

Gustave Caillebotte has captured the exquisite serenity of a lazy summer afternoon in this work that depicts two members of his family absorbed in their reading in the shade of the orange trees that are part of the park-like garden of the artist´s family estate at Yerres, France. Closely observed and rendered with characteristically flickering brushstrokes, this painting is one of Caillebotte´s masterpieces and one of the finest Impressionist paintings in the Beck Collection of the MFAH.
