This charming little panel reminds us that very few early Italian paintings have survived in their original format. This panel originally formed part of a series devoted to scenes of the life of Clare (c. 1194—1253), a Christian saint and founder of the Franciscan Order of the Poor Clares. It may have been one of the several small paintings running below an altarpiece that form a frieze known as a predella, or it may have been part of the decoration of a piece of furniture.
