Aiding a Comrade (Past All Surgery)

Frederic S. Remington, Aiding a Comrade (Past All Surgery), 1889—90, 43.23
The Hogg Brothers Collection, gift of Miss Ima Hogg
The works in the MFAH collection highlight Remington´s achievements as the creator of an enduring archetype: the American cowboy.

Remington´s rise to fame was spectacular. He mythologized the experience of America´s westward expansion. Many of Remington´s paintings chronicle the rapidly disappearing cultures of Native America. The collection was originally formed in the early 20th century by Will Hogg, Houston businessman and brother of Bayou Bend founder Ima Hogg.
