This painting is one of the few signed works by Bartolomeo Bettera, who specialized in the narrow field of still lifes with musical instruments. Although no two paintings by Bettera are identical, the compositions are very similar-a horizontal format with a multitude of objects piled on a carpet-covered table. The types of objects (various stringed instruments, a stack of books, an armillary sphere, a conch shell, an apple) are repeated from one painting to the next. Some of the more distinctive objects, which he presumably owned, such as the oriental carpet and the finely decorated Spanish guitar, are easily recognizable in several paintings.
