Gorky formed a crucial bridge between European Surrealism and American Abstract Expressionism. Although his mature style always referred to nature, it did so in a fragmented, allusive way. This satisfyingly integrated drawing was created at the Virginia farm where Gorky was recovering from an operation. Not strong enough to paint, Gorky created perhaps his most remarkable body of drawings—some 300 sheets—in that summer of 1946.
