On a photographic tour of the United States, Swiss-born American artist Robert Frank recorded his personal, sometimes cynical, reactions to the country, such as this image of the vast and lonely desert highway. Published as a book titled The Americans, his photographs presented an unromanticized portrait of the nation that acutely impacted subsequent photographers. The MFAH owns more than 320 works by Frank, including all the images from The Americans.
