Every Sunday, it's ArtTime/FamilyTime at the MFAH. On October 14, 21, and 28, explore the magnificent queen's Crown from the royal court of Singaraja in Bali, an Indonesian island. The Family Zone location is in Gallery 102M in the Law Building. Spend some time with friendly family educators: sit on a pillow and read, sketch a work of art, and join an investigation of an artwork. In the studio, create an art project inspired by the original works of art on display in the Family Zone. This suite of programs includes:

  • Sunday Storytime Make connections between a storybook and a work of art in the galleries. Every week in October, hear an MFAH educator read Princess Hyacinth: The Surprising Tale of a Girl Who Floated by Florence Parry Heide. Then have fun exploring and connecting the book to the Indonesian queen's crown. (Begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Family Zone)
  • Gallery Investigations An MFAH educator at the Gallery Cart has an "I Spy" looking activity, books, and hands-on materials for families. (Begins after Sunday Storytime in the Family Zone)
  • Sketching in the Galleries An MFAH teaching artist guides adults and children of all drawing levels at this informal program. Families have the chance to draw the beautiful gold crowns and other works of art in the Indonesian Gold Gallery.
  • Creation Station At this family-friendly studio program, an MFAH teaching artist encourages guests to create art using materials or ideas similar to those used by the artist who created the featured work of art on display in the Family Zone. This month, families create their own wearable crowns, inspired by the beautiful and elaborate design of the queen's Crown in the MFAH collection. Creation Station takes place in Farish Classroom, on the lower level of the Beck Building.
