Sunday Family Zone & Studio “Patterns at Play: Exploring a Work of Art by Édouard Vuillard”

Sunday, Sep 30, 2012
1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Beck Building
5601 Main Street Map & Directions

Every Sunday, it's ArtTime/FamilyTime at the MFAH. On September 9, 16, 23, and 30, explore the wonderful 19th-century painting The Promenade, by French artist Édouard Vuillard. Look for signs in the lobbies that tell you which gallery the Family Zone is located in that day. Spend some time with the friendly family educators: sit on a pillow and read; sketch a work of art; and join an investigation of an artwork. In the studio, create an art project inspired by the painting. This suite of programs includes:

  • Sunday Storytime (begins at 1:30 p.m.) Make connections between a storybook and a work of art in the galleries. Every week in September, hear an MFAH educator read Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans. Then have fun exploring and connecting the book to the painting The Promenade.

  • Creation Station At this family-friendly workshop, artists encourage families to create art using materials or ideas similar to those used by the artist who created the featured work of art on display in the Family Zone. This month, families will create a scene that will tell a story, using sponges and stamp pads to create textured patterns on a landscape.

  • Gallery Investigations An MFAH educator at the Gallery Cart has an "I Spy" looking activity, books, and hands-on materials for families.

  • Sketching in the Galleries Adults and children of all drawing levels enjoy an informal program guided by an MFAH teaching artist. This month's location: European art gallery 221 (on the second floor of the Beck Building).
