Demonstration: The Art of Ikebana Flower Arranging

Sunday, Mar 18, 2012
2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Beck Building, Mezzanine
5601 Main Street Map & Directions

Presented by Ingrid Lüders, an internationally renowned Grand Master of the Ohara School

The art of ikebana flower arranging has been practiced throughout Japan for more than 600 years. First developed from the Buddhist ritual of offering flowers to the spirits of the dead, ikebana soon became an independent art form practiced by all levels of society. Today, there are many schools and styles of ikebana, though each retains symbolic and philosophical overtones from ikebana´s religious origins.

The Ohara School was founded in the 19th century after trade opened between Japan and the West. In celebration of the new Arts of Japan gallery at the MFAH, Ingrid Lüders demonstrates how the Ohara style expresses the glory of the spring season.

Open to the public and free with general museum admission. MFAH Members always receive free general admission. Seating is limited. A reception follows the program.

Generously cosponsored by Ikebana International/Houston Chapter 12, Sushila Mathew president.
