The power of Lila Downs' award-winning voice and the impact of her songs have buoyed films such as Frida and Real Women Have Curves. This year, Downs has inspired días de los niños del mundo, a celebration of youth and culture that reflects the spirit of the Children’s Day celebrations that take place around the world. A host of activities and performances throughout Houston include programs such as the April 7 MFAH Family Day and the annual Wells Fargo Student Visual Art Contest.

The singer’s connection to the visual arts is strong. Her most recent album was inspired by traditional art forms such as the votive paintings of Mexico, and she commissioned works of art in the same tradition to complement her performances. On the evening before her April 5 performance at Wortham Center, Downs appears at the MFAH to talk about her background; her artistic style and influences; the votive paintings; and the artistic expression of youth and culture. Questions?
