Also Like Life: The Films of Hou Hsiao-hsien

This internationally touring retrospective celebrates the legendary Hou Hsiao-hsien (born 1947). In the words of series organizer Richard Suchenski of Bard College, “Hou Hsiao-hsien is the most important Taiwanese filmmaker. His sensuous, richly nuanced work is at the heart of everything that is vigorous and genuine in contemporary film culture.” Suchenski's book of critical essays is available in the Museum's Hirsch Library. After the MFAH screenings March 6–8, Rice Cinema presents three additional films March 13–15: Flowers of Shanghai (1998), Good Men Good Women (1995), and Millennium Mambo (2001).

For an insider's look at Hou's films, check out the blog post by Will Otter, this year's Rice University Camfield Fellow at the MFAH.
