"An Earthly Paradise of Or-mulu": Romantic Poetry and the Rienzi Collection
Presented by Karen Fang, PhD, professor of English, University of Houston

In his 1824 epic poem Don Juan, Lord Byron detailed the fashion for ornamental property that characterized Regency society. Much of the art within the Rienzi Collection stems from this period. Who were the major literary figures of the era, and how do their works illuminate the vases, miniatures, and other decorative objets that the Mastersons collected? What was the “Romantic” tradition in art and literature, and in what ways do Rienzi's estate and collection characterize what Byron described as “an earthly paradise of Or-mulu”?

Karen Fang, PhD, is associate professor in the Department of English at the University of Houston, where she teaches British Romantic literature. Her book "Romantic Writing and the Empire of Signs" examines late Georgian writing about exotic artifacts such as Chinese porcelain and the Rosetta Stone.

Admission (includes reception) is $15 for adults; $12 for MFAH Members.
