MayMMayChrist on the Cross
Speaker: Melina Kervandjian, senior editor, MFAH Publications Department
Rienzi’s Christ on the Cross is an oil painting attributed to the prolific and versatile 19th-century French artist Gustave Doré. Painted during a period of increased anti-clerical sentiment, Doré’s small, devotional work explores an iconic subject in ways that reflect his thorough study of the Bible as well as his interests in expressing physical and psychological struggle.
