Out of Exile: The Photography of Fred Stein

Directed by Dawn Freer and Peter Stein
(USA, 2020, Digital)

Many people recognize the photographs of German photographer Fred Stein, yet few know his name. His street scenes of 1930s Paris and 1940s New York, and his portraits of famous people, are well known.

Who was this man who fled the Nazis and who, despite such upheaval, had a positive, often humorous view of the world? Stein’s son, Peter, traces his father’s footsteps in Out of Exile, a personal documentary.
