Law Building, Lower Level
1001 Bissonnet Map & Directions

Presented by Jeff Luhnow, general manager, Houston Astros

Copresented with Bo Porter, manager, Houston Astros

Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland Athletics. Overburdened with the lowest salary restrictions in baseball, Beane must find a competitive advantage to have a winning team, and he shakes the sport to its core when he hires a statistician (Jonah Hill) to analyze and place value on the players. This Academy Award–nominated film is based on the 2003 book by Michael Lewis.

Jeff Luhnow became general manager of the Houston Astros when owner Jim Crane hired him from the St. Louis Cardinals. Born and raised in Mexico, Luhnow has degrees in economics and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Luhnow was a vice president with the Cardinals since 2003 and oversaw the amateur draft as well as scouting efforts in Latin America beginning in 2004. He was instrumental in the organization's minor league successes, including the best system record in baseball in 2010 and five minor league championships from the rookie leagues to Triple-A. During his time with the Cardinals, the organization managed to build and maintain a strong farm system while at the same time winning at all levels, including three World Series appearances and two World Championships

Bo Porter played football and baseball at the University of Iowa before playing in parts of three major league seasons with Texas, the Chicago Cubs, and Oakland. Porter was the Washington Nationals' third base coach when the Houston Astros hired him as the team's 17th manager in 2012. Porter's career includes stints as a roving instructor, coach, and player, as well as managing the Marlins' Jamestown club of the New York-Penn League for the 2006 season. Porter is a Houston resident.
