Seductive, fearless, and outrageous, Marina Abramovic (born in 1946 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia) has been challenging the public for nearly 40 years. Using her own body as a vehicle, pushing herself beyond her physical and mental limits, she creates performances that defy and shock. With total access granted by Abramovic and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this riveting documentary sets the context for her work, including archival footage of performances with her former partner Ulay, and follows preparation for her major 2010 exhibition at MoMA. Chronicling the public’s experience of the exhibition through real-time sequences excerpted from the 736 hours she sat stoically opposite museum visitors (attendance reportedly totaled 750,000), the film viscerally approximates the experience of being there.
