This lecture explores how a map of overwhelming dimensions, created in 1602 by Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit priest living in China, was intended to be both an illustration of the extent of the emperor’s realm and a compendium of knowledge about the world. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition of Ricci's monumental work Map of the Ten Thousand Countries of the Earth.
