History Book Club “An American Quilt”

The History Book Club presents free, bimonthly discussions about literature and art, and you’re invited. These talks focus on books about life in Europe and America during the 18th and 19th centuries, inspired by the collections of the two MFAH house museums: Bayou Bend and Rienzi.

“A re-examination of American history through the lens of race, class, and gender.” —New York Journal of Books

An American Quilt: Unfolding a Story of Family and Slavery explores the far reach of slavery, from New England to the Caribbean; the role it played in the growth of mercantile America; and the bonds between the agrarian south and the industrial north before the Civil War. Through the discovery of a remarkable quilt, author Rachel May addresses the legacy of slavery, revealing the lives and world of urban enslaved women.
