Gallery Talk “Portraiture in the Grand Manner”

Saturday, Jun 09, 2012
1 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

Beck Building
5601 Main Street Map & Directions

Often painted in full length and life size, Grand Manner portraits lent a dignified status to their sitters. Through paintings by the masters of the style—Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and their contemporaries—find out how artists incorporated visual symbols, such as settings and accessories, to elevate their subjects.

This 45-minute gallery talk explores paintings in both the exhibition Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London and the MFAH collection.
